The First Fairway of Spring!

THE FIRST FAIRWAY OF SPRING!

March in Oregon can mean unpredictable golf—unless you know where to go.

In Florence, spring arrives gently. While inland courses from Portland to Ashland wrestle with lingering frost and soggy turf, Florence’s fairways are firm, fast, and ready for play. Built on natural dunes, both courses drain quickly after showers. As locals like to say, “it rains far less than our reputation has earned—there’s no bad weather, just inadequate clothing.”

At Sandpines Golf Links, Rees Jones’s celebrated design continues to impress. Named Golf Digest’s “Best New Public Course in America,” Sandpines offers generous fairways, sculpted bunkers, and greens that reward thoughtful approach shots. Under owners Tara Bahl and Andrew Arredondo, the course is thriving again—welcoming, beautifully maintained, and a joy to walk. The recently-opened Birdies and Bogeys Restaurant is excellent.

Minutes away, Ocean Dunes Golf Links—operated by Three Rivers Casino Resort—has a long history as a favorite. It wanders across rolling dunes and among coastal pines. Breezes off the Pacific add a Scottish touch, turning every round into a creative test of shot-making. Every level gets the fun of the challenge. The casino has a gallery of great food and drink options.

March is the insider’s month: Tee times are accessible. The pace is relaxed. And compared to Oregon’s marquee coastal resorts, Florence delivers championship-caliber golf at remarkable value.

After your round, see the sights, stroll Historic Old Town, warm up with chowder, or enjoy Oregon Pinot Noir overlooking the Siuslaw River. Stay oceanfront, riverside, lakeside, or at Three Rivers. Nearly all local lodgings have golf packages.

This spring, get a head start on the season. In Florence, the fairways are always calling!
